Chancet Wood says no to cold calling!

Sheffield Homes customers in Chancet Wood are being given lessons on how to be vigilant when it comes to cold calling from sales people and rogue traders, as part of an advice and information ‘Safety Day’.

The day which is being organised by Sheffield Homes Area South West Community Engagement Team is to be held at Brierley Fields Community Centre, Abbey Brook Drive, Chancet Wood on Tuesday 8th April between 1-5pm.  The aim is to help raise awareness of safety and security issues among residents.

South Yorkshire Police will be attending the event together with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service who will be available to offer advice on home fire safety.

Part of the day will feature the launch of a No Cold Calling Zone in the area aimed at empowering people to say ‘No’ to door step callers and protect themselves at their door and include a demonstration by South Yorkshire Police and Trading Standards called ‘Strangers at the Door’.

Following a few simple guidelines could save you from becoming a victim of doorstep crime:
·         Ask for proof of identity
·         Keep doors locked at all times
·         Never open the door to someone you are not expecting
·         Don’t keep large amounts of cash in your home
·         Never set on a workman or buy anything at your door
The elderly are particularly at risk, as rogue traders see them as an easy target.

Age Concern and 50+ are also on hand to give advice to residents about their services.

Anyone interested in attending the Safety Day should call Sheffield Homes Area South West Community Engagement Team on 205 3333.

Lisa Lobue, Sheffield Homes’ South West Area Co-ordinator for the Community Engagement  Team, says: “The welfare of our customers is very important to us and Sheffield Homes is proud to help launch the no cold calling zone.  This together with the other activities on the day should prove to be an excellent way of raising awareness of safety issues with residents”.
