Local Children Get to the Root of Proper Tree Planting

Children from Springfield Primary did their bit to help keep the Hanover Estate green for future generations, by taking part in tree planting organised by Sheffield Homes.  The pupils jumped at the opportunity to get outside, get their hands dirty and learn about how to care for the trees and their local environment.

A mixture of Field Maple, Rowan, Medlar and Ornamental Pear trees were planted in the play area at Exeter Place on Hanover Estate. On hand to get stuck in with the School children were Sheffield Homes neighbourhood wardens and representatives from the local Broomhall Forum.

The tree planting is part of an ongoing partnership between Sheffield Homes and Sheffield City Council’s Parks and Countryside Trees and Woodland’s department as part of a tree renewal programme. It is being delivered through community forestry projects and by the end of April 2008 over 460 trees will have been planted.

Simon Young, Area Manager, Sheffield Homes said: “Sheffield is one of the greenest Cities in the UK. Protecting our green space is becoming more important as the City expands and develops. Fantastic initiatives like the tree renewal programme which is involving young people, will ensure that our city stays this way for years to come.”

Jez Platts, Sheffield Homes Community Forester, added: “We really enjoy working closely with local schools. It gives us the opportunity to educate children about the importance of looking after trees and the benefits they have on the environment while having a fun time.”

The tree planting is part of the children’s science curriculum, helping them to learn about habitats and the importance of looking after the environment. This programme will also help Sheffield’s Schools to achieve healthy schools status and forms part of a wider growing scheme where children plant trees, climbers and fruit and vegetables in the schools grounds.
