Housing staff help Sheffield Sharp Shooters to head for success
Sheffield Homes has helped 5-a-side football team, Gleadless Valley’s Sheffield Sharp Shooters, to ‘head for success’ by providing the team with a full football kit including shirts, shorts, socks and shin pads. The kit was provided in partnership with South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield Council’s Safer Neighbourhood Partnership Team, who are also providing coaching sessions for young people in the Gleadless area.
Sheffield Sharp Shooters who play every Thursday night at the Goals 5-a-side pitches at Norfolk Park, are currently doing well in the league, having won all but two matches and are hoping that the new kit will spur them on to even greater success.
Matt Corker, Sheffield Sharp Shooters Manager says “The team is really pleased to have received the kit. Before the lads had to play in their own shirts, which were lots of different colours and this could certainly cause some confusion on the pitch! Now with the new kit it’s easy to see who’s in our team.”
Sheffield Homes looks to assist young people in finding positive activities within their local communities and took an interest in the team after being put in touch with them by Terry Wright from Gleadless Valley Tenants and Residents Association. Staff from Sheffield Homes went along to see some of the games, got to know the players and decided to offer them the kit.
Les Benn, Sheffield Homes Area South West Manager says “It’s so important that young people have positive activities to be involved in and we’re really pleased that we’ve been able to help the Sheffield Sharp shooters out in this way. I know staff have really enjoyed watching them play, although they haven’t invited us on to play as substitutes yet!”
Staff from Sheffield Homes along with Councillor Denise Reaney, Terry Wright, Gleadless Valley TARA, South Yorkshire Police’s Inspector Tim Ireland and Sheffield Council’s Garry Collingwood attended the presentation ceremony at Newfield Green Tenants Hall.
