Sheffield Homes Customers Given Timely Reminder to Insure their Home Contents

A year on from the flooding that hit Sheffield in June 2007, Sheffield Homes is reminding customers that they can take advantage of an improved household contents insurance scheme.

All Sheffield Homes customers who are not in rent arrears can apply to take advantage of the scheme, which doesn’t discriminate against any areas within Sheffield, even areas which have been flooded.

Premiums are paid weekly with rent, which means that it is easy for customers to insure their belongings under the low cost scheme and this year the scheme is offering even better value for money. Some of the improved benefits include:
  • all premiums have been reduced by 10% making them even cheaper than in previous years
  • some levels of cover have been improved
  • accidental damage cover has been fully extended to include items such as spillages
  • items secured in outbuildings or when you’re on holiday are now insured.

The scheme is arranged with Norwich Union, a major insurance company and offers continuous 'new for old' cover against fire, theft and water damage and there is no excess.

There are currently over 4,500 customers in the scheme. Customers over 60 years old can obtain cover for a minimum of £6,000 worth of contents, costing from as little as 92p a week. Other customers can obtain minimum cover of £9,000 for £1.38 a week.

Maxine Stavrianakos, Head of Income Management for Sheffield Homes says “Following last year’s storms nearly 80 customers benefited from taking part in this scheme. Obviously we hope that there will be no repeat of the flooding in 2007, but many people are surprised what their home contents are worth, so it’s very important that customers make sure that their furniture, belongings and decorations are protected.”
