Residents to take pride in Norfolk Park in a day of celebrations

Sheffield Homes and its partners held a special day of celebrations to end a week of action, in Norfolk Park. The celebrations included fun activities from face painting and bouncy castles to gardening competitions and sports activities including a climbing wall.

The Sheffield Homes led week of action focused on cleaning up, taking pride and making a visible difference in Norfolk Park from the 9th to the 13th June. The initiative was set up with members of the Safer Communities Partnership including South Yorkshire Police, Sheffield Drug & Alcohol Action Team, South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue and Sheffield City Council. On the day they were on hand to offer advice on personal safety, crime prevention, home security, drug awareness and fire prevention.

During the Week of Action, Norfolk Park residents were invited to take part in a gardening competition to celebrate the pride local people take in their properties and surrounding area. The standard of entries was so high, nearly 40 gardens were shortlisted for the judges walk around. The judging panel was made up of key partners from the Safer Communities Partnership and looked out for the most creative floral and planting arrangements, block paving and pots.

The judges were so impressed they couldn’t decide between 3 entries that stood out from the rest of the competition. The three eventual winners were Irene Worsnop (St Aidans Avenue), Winifred Cheetham (Samuel Road) and John Mullis (Samuel Road). Each winner was presented a certificate and B&Q vouchers by Lord Mayor Councillor Jane Bird.

Mrs Cheetham is an elderly tenant living on Samuel Road. She said: “I’m over the moon to have won this competition. It’ is hard work keeping the garden nice at my age but it is something I really enjoy doing. I really enjoyed the fun day and it was a pleasure to have met Lord Mayor Councillor Jane Bird.”

Simon Young, Sheffield Homes Central Area Manager said: “This is a great opportunity and example of what good partnership work can achieve. I am glad that we were able to celebrate this week of action with residents in a day of celebrations and involve local residents in what proved to be a very popular gardening competition.”

It is so warming to see how proud people are of their neighbourhood and how they are genuinely interested in the work that Sheffield Homes and our partners are doing in the area.”

The week of action included over 100 activities to make the area a cleaner place to live. Maintenance, repairs and improvements were carried out on communal areas, including the painting of railings and the tidying of gardens and walkways. Streetlights were also repaired on particular streets to make the area brighter and safer.
