Construction partners appointed for housing investment programme

Sheffield City Council has announced the five construction partners who will do the improvement work to council homes to bring them up to the Government’s Decent Homes Standard by 2010.  The seven-year contracts are worth up to £1billion.
The contractors are:

  • Connaught Property Services Ltd
  • Keepmoat plc
  • Kier Sheffield LLP
  • Lovell Partnerships Ltd
  • Mears Group plc

Councillor Chris Weldon, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “We are committed to bringing all council owned houses up to the Decent Homes Standard, and I am delighted that we have appointed the contractors who will modernise and refurbish homes in Sheffield.

"As well as working on council properties, they will create local employment opportunities, especially through the development of social enterprises, the establishment of a training centre for 14-19 year olds, and the opportunity to create up to 500 apprenticeships in the first three years, which are all part of the contract agreement.”

Tenants were involved in the appointment process and the contractors were evaluated on these criteria: financial proposals, quality and service, partnering and resources, and local regeneration.

Sheffield Homes will oversee the housing investment programme and manage the contractors on behalf of the Council.  Sheffield Homes was recently awarded the maximum three star rating in a Government inspection.  This result initially releases £285million to fund the investment work the contractors will carry out.  Work will start on site in January 2005.
