Half-term Street Art Project

Sheffield Homes is sponsoring a half-term Street Art Project this week (14-16 February).

The Street Art Project will take place between 10.00am and 3.00pm on the 14, 15 and 16 February 2005 at the Wincobank Washouse, Merton Lane, Low Wincobank.

A mural will be created under the guidance of Foundry Street Artist, Neil Antcliff. The project is the culmination of hard work by local young people to improve a derelict, overgrown area outside the Washouse. The mural will be a combination of local history and modern interests of the young people who have themselves been involved in the design. Participants will also have the opportunity to create their own 'street art board' to take away as a keepsake of the event.

The project is part of Sheffield Homes' Brightside, Flower & Wincobank Street Warden scheme working together with housing staff and Connexions workers, employed by Sheffield Futures (see notes to editors), to engage young people in the Low Wincobank area. There have been problems with anti social behaviour in the area recently, and the project is part of the response to this. A range of initiatives are being considered to engage and distract young people away from possible involvement in anti-social behaviour.

John Hosey, Area Housing Manager, Sheffield Homes, said: "Sheffield Homes is working hard to make neighbourhoods safer places to be, and this project is just one part of the work that we do. Tackling anti social behaviour is not just about enforcement but also prevention, and diversion. The work the young people have done in this area so far has been fantastic. I’m really looking forward to seeing the mural and boards that the young people design, and hope that they enjoy the week."

Ends

Photocall: 12noon on Wednesday 16 February. Area Housing Manager John Hosey, Greg Rippon, Sheffield Homes will be at Wincobank Washouse for the final stages of the mural.
