Community takes steps to healthy lives

A special community event is being held in Firvale to help raise awareness of healthy living amongst senior residents.

Wensley Tenants and Residents Association (TARA), the Primary Care Trust and Age Concern are working together to encourage local people to think about leading an active and healthy lifestyle.  The event will look at topics such as healthy diets and nutrition, and Activity Sheffield will be on hand to demonstrate a range of light exercise techniques and will offer advice about keeping fit.

The day will also include a special consultation event.  Residents will be able to work in partnership with the three organisers to help identify problems faced by older people, which are preventing them from leading healthier and more active lives.  The results from this consultation will then be used to set up a range of localised events and fitness classes that are tailored to the needs of the older community.

The event is being held at Wensley Community Centre on Hinde House Crescent in Firvale on Wednesday 28th February, 10am-12.30pm.  Everyone is welcome.

Visitors will also receive free fresh fruit to help encourage people to eat 5 pieces of fruit and veg a day.

Wensley TARA Secretary, Gladys Newbolt said, “We wanted to help bring the community together with an event that offers advice and support on a subject that’s important to everyone.  It’s about helping people in the area understand the small steps they can take to living a healthy lifestyle.”
