Gardening contest makes Gleadless look bloomin' marvellous

The presentation to the winners
Green-fingered residents in Gleadless have dug deep to try and win a local gardening contest.

Over 30 budding horticulturists entered the new competition organised by Sheffield Homes and Gleadless Valley Tenants and Residents Association (TARA).

There were two categories, best garden and best container garden, with a first and runners up prize for each category.

The competition was one of several activities organised locally by Sheffield Homes to get people more involved in their area and also capture their views on housing services.

“The judges had a difficult job in deciding the winners and it was only after a second viewing that they were able to make their decision,” said Dave Wornes, Assistant Area Manager at Sheffield Homes.

“We organised this competition to help forge links with the local community and encourage residents to take pride in their gardens, as well as raise our profile and that of Gleadless Valley TARA.

“Activities like this enable us to meet people and get their views.  For example, last month we took part in the Gleadless Valley Fun Day where 110 questionnaires about tenant participation were completed.  If tenants think we should be doing some things better, we want to know about it.”

Local councillor Rosemary Telfer, retired Area Manager with Sheffield Homes, Martyn Games, and Chair of Gleadless Valley TARA, Terry Wright, judged the gardening competition.

The Gleadless in Bloom winners and runners up were: Best Garden – first prize Mrs M Dawson, of Plowright Way; runner up Mrs E Wood, of Plowright Mount; Best Container – first prize Mr L Greaves, of Farmstead Close; runner up Mrs R Parkin, of Leighton Road.

A prize presentation was held on Wednesday 2nd August at Newfield Green Community Centre.
