Pensioners cue up for sheltered success
Reigning World Snooker Champion Graeme Dott might be set for an unexpected challenge to his title in Sheffield next year if the determination of a group of pensioners is borne out on the green baize.
The residents from Heeley’s Sheffield Homes-managed Cambridge Court sheltered accommodation scheme have spent the past few months working hard to raise funds for their own snooker table and now, with help from Sheffield Homes and Kier, are the proud owners of one of the best 12 foot snooker tables in Sheffield complete with state-of-the-art lighting.
Scores of pensioners, led by snooker-mad resident Ken Sorsby, are now putting the finishing touches to their game and getting ready to take on all-comers.
Mike Broom, Sheffield Homes Senior Housing Officer at Cambridge Court, said: “It’s great when residents feel passionate about something they really want and set the wheels in motions to really make it happen. Their enthusiasm and endless fundraising coffee mornings and bring and buy sales won the support of Sheffield Homes, Kier and Heeley Development Trust who’ve helped make the dream a reality.”
Cambridge Court – like all of the city’s sheltered housing schemes operated by Sheffield Homes – is open to family and friends of residents and they’re queuing up to have a go in the sheltered accommodation games room that also boasts a darts board and other pastimes.
Andy Wilson, Construction Manager for Kier, said: “We are really pleased to offer our support to the residents of Cambridge Court. Wherever possible, we like to contribute to the happiness of our customers by supporting local community projects.”
Sheltered accommodation is aimed at anyone over 60 who is looking for a new home, people over 55 with a priority due to mobility, health or disability needs, or for anyone that wants to retain their own independence but have the reassurance of added security.
