A ‘Dragons Den’ style community funding competition is just one of many exciting fun competitions and activities at Sheffield Homes’ 2008 annual residents conference.

Over 200 tenants and residents in Sheffield will be attending the special event hosted by Sheffield Homes, as a thank you for helping to improve local neighbourhoods. The conference will take place on Tuesday 2nd September at Cutlers Hall, to reflect our proud Sheffield heritage.

Sheffield Homes’ Community Engagement team will be hosting the Dragons Den style funding competition. The ‘dragons’ will include Sheffield Homes, Decent Homes partners, Wates Living Space, Keepmoat, Henry Boot Construction, Lovell Partnerships, Kier Sheffield and household waste management partner Veolia Sheffield Ltd. The dragons will be waiting to invest big money in the best pitched community projects.

Exciting projects include the Crafty Carders who meet to knit booties and bonnets for premature babies at Jessop’s Hospital, to help them keep warm during a vulnerable period of their young lives. The project also provides an opportunity for elderly residents to meet up, socialise and keep active by knitting.

Other community projects include the Upper Springs youth project, which brings together young people and teaches them about community cohesion and conflict resolution through fun events and sessions.

The conference will also include a series of fun interactive workshops, free tours detailing the history of Cutlers Hall, prize giveaways, customer feedback sessions and a chance for groups to showcase what they have done in their communities.

Sheffield Homes, the company that manages approximately 42,000 council homes, is running the special “Your City, Your Communities, Your Choice” themed conference that will bring together tenants and residents from across the City in celebration of being a ‘Sheffielder’.

Janet Parry, Sheffield Homes Director of Housing Management said, “This year’s conference will provide a fantastic opportunity for people who volunteer their valuable time for the benefit of other people living in their neighbourhood, to come together and celebrate each others achievements. The ‘Dragons Den’ style funding competition is a really innovative way of showcasing excellent community projects and raising funds at the same time.

Following the success of last years Paul Key Community Champions Awards we will also be using the conference as a platform to launch this year’s awards.”
