Junior Neighbourhood Wardens Patrol the South East

Sheffield Homes have been getting a helping hand from school children in the south east of the city this summer who were keen to help towards keeping their community clean, tidy and trouble free.

Throughout the summer holidays the Sheffield Homes South East Neighbourhood Wardens have been running a Junior Wardens Scheme involving a total of 40 children from Halfway Juniors, Stradbroke Primary, Shortbrook Primary, Mosborough Primary, St John Fisher Primary, Gleadless Primary, Reignhead Primary and Woodhouse West Primary.

Each child spent a total of 3 days with the wardens. Part of their duties involved going out on patrol with staff and making notes of incidents of fly-tipping and graffiti then ringing the jobs through to the Estate Team.

The next stage of the process involved the youngsters seeing for themselves how the graffiti is removed using a mechanical bowser which is filled with a mixture of graffiti powder and water and sprayed onto the wall.

To keep the community ‘greener’, the youngsters then got involved in a spot of shrub planting in five areas throughout the south east.

The children also attended a “Street Play” scheme that Activity Sheffield have been running at Shortbrook Primary School which aims to make youngsters more aware of the impact of anti-social behaviour within their local community.  A treasure hunt was also organised along with other fun activities.

South East Area Manager Shaun Nolan said, “The aim of this scheme is to bring young people in the south east together to learn about good citizenship, the environment and the role of the Neighbourhood Wardens, in a fun and exciting way.  The wardens have worked extremely hard getting this off the ground and I’m pleased to say the youngsters involved have thoroughly enjoyed their time with us and hopefully gained from it.”

All the Junior Wardens were provided with a Sheffield Homes fleece and polo shirt just like the Neighbourhood Wardens themselves and at the end of the day they each received a Certificate of Achievement for all their hard work.
