Open Day at Mount View Lodge
Sheffield Homes’ Sheltered Housing Scheme, Mount View Lodge at Derbyshire Lane, Norton Lees, will be opening its doors to the public on Thursday 4 September from 3pm to 5pm for a Get Involved Open Day! The invite is open to the tenants' families, local community groups and older residents from the area.
The sheltered housing staff are keen to promote Mount View Lodge as a social centre for the community following on from the success of the POPPIE project (active ageing project) which has been running at the Scheme since last year and has proved very successful.
Mount View Warden Pat Stokes explains, “As Mount View Lodge is only a small scheme, the tenants wanted more older people to benefit from the range of activities that they are developing and to create more of a 'buzz' around the scheme, also we have a lovely revamped garden and good sized lounge to share, especially as there are very few community centres in the area. Please come along to our Open Day, have a look around and talk to the tenants and staff and enjoy a cup of tea and a scone. We are also looking for volunteers to help run the activities, as well as people to benefit from what is on offer.”
On the day there will be stalls with cakes and cream teas, second-hand books and a raffle to raise money for the social club funds, but primarily the open afternoon is an opportunity for groups in the local area to get together, have a look around, and see what can be done. Maybe people would like to organise or host book clubs, bingo evenings, etc, or link in with current activities - chairobics exercise sessions, coffee mornings, gardening club, outings for pub lunches and trips to the coast.
Sheltered Housing Manager Rhian Owen said, “We are trying to organise a range of activities so that our tenants and older people in the local community can get together to enjoy social activities and gentle exercise sessions. We would like Mount View Lodge to be a focus in the local area for older people, as we realise that many of them can experience loneliness and social isolation and we don't want to be an island in the middle of the community.”
