Community benefits from Decent Homes investment by Sheffield Homes
Easter came early for scores of children living in the Norwood and Bishopholme area of Sheffield as part of the biggest investment in housing in the city’s history.
Over 60 kids enjoyed a party at the local community centre organised by the area’s Tenants and Residents Association, Keepmoat – the contractor leading on Sheffield Homes’s near £700 million pound Decent Homes programme in the area – and Sheffield Homes.
Each child received an Easter egg – Keepmoat also donated a laptop computer, printer and digital camera to 5-year-old Ellis Fothergill, who is battling cancer, to allow her to do her school work from home.
Sheffield Homes Director of Investment Jon Lovibond said: “Sheffield Homes’ contractor Keepmoat have built a great relationship with the community and, as well as improving homes, they are also helping the local people in many other ways.”
Keepmoat is now planning to donate a fully fitted kitchen to the local community centre as part of their commitment to the area.
Community Liaison Manager, Emma Shepherd, from Keepmoat, said: “The multi-million pound Decent Homes programme being spearheaded by Sheffield Homes is transforming the lives of thousand of tenants in the area but it takes a great deal of time and upheaval. The local community have been very understanding and supportive and we like to do everything we can to thank them for their patience.”
Sheffield Homes is spearheading the huge Decent Homes programme which will see around 40,000 council homes across Sheffield, improved including new kitchens, bathrooms and central heating systems.
Tenants voted for Sheffield’s council housing to be transferred to a new Arms Length Management Organisation – Sheffield Homes – in 2004, and for the huge Decent Homes investment programme, which is now beginning to transform homes and estates in the city.
The Decent Homes programme will be completed across the whole of the city by 2010.
