Offenders make amends to Sheffield Homes and Police
Teenage girls responsible for a spate of graffiti on Sheffield Homes property are taking part a new initiative to discourage other youths from following suit.
The group of girls, who were identified by their graffiti ‘tags’, agreed to spend a day repainting the areas they defaced after South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield Homes agreed not to proceed with an arrest for criminal damage.
Under the supervision of PC Liz Kooper from the Manor Park and Arbourthorne Safer Neighbourhoods division of South Yorkshire Police, the girls spent a Saturday afternoon repainting areas on Wulfric Place in the Upper Manor area of the city.
PC Liz Kooper said, “South Yorkshire Police are committed to working in partnership with Sheffield homes to prevent anti-social behaviour. We hope this initiative action will discourage others tempted to participate in anti-social behaviour. Young people need to realise that graffiti is a crime and does have an impact on people living in the communities.”
Simon Young, Area Manager at Sheffield Homes added, “We aim to provide residents throughout Sheffield with clean and welcoming neighbourhoods. We feel that this initiative will promote a culture of respect in the community and help the girls back on track. Similar schemes have proven to be a huge success to make offenders rethink being involved in damaging property again in future and seriously consider the impact their actions have on the whole community.”
