A safe spring for kids in Sheffield

Stay Safe in Sheffield, Sheffield Homes children’s safety campaign which aims to prevent potential accidents and incidents by discouraging children from playing on or around areas where building work is being carried out, is being re-launched in time for spring.

The massive Decent Homes programme of work being carried out by Sheffield Homes on Council homes has highlighted the need to educate children about potential dangers associated with building work. Now that the winter is nearly over and children are tempted to play outside more, Sheffield Homes is joining forces with partner contractors including Connaught Partnership Ltd, Keepmoat plc, Kier Sheffield LLP, Lovell Partnerships Ltd, Mears Group plc, Henry Boot Construction Ltd and Wates Living Space to re-launch its Stay Safe in Sheffield campaign, in time for spring and the Easter holidays.

63 schools will be visited over the next few weeks which are those closest to where the Decent Homes work is going on and children between the ages of 4-11 given a fun introduction to the dangers of building and home improvement work with puzzles, competitions and videos.

Iain Allott, Sheffield Homes, Decent Homes Programme Manager comments “We are delighted to launch the Stay Safe in Sheffield Campaign for the third year running. It provides a great platform for us to work closely with the local schools and work directly with the children to make their communities a safer place to live and play.  The previous two years have been very successful and we’ve got a great competition this year, which we hope will attract a record number of entrants”

As part of the campaign Sheffield Homes is running a competition to design a builder.
Children will be asked to work together and draw around a classmate. They will then colour it in and draw on safety equipment such as goggles, hardhat etc. The finished builder will be mounted on to MDF and the school can keep the builder as their safety mascot.  The children then need to give their builder a name and a catchphrase that will encourage children to stay safe in Sheffield. Vouchers of £1,000 will be awarded to the schools of the winners of three age groups  4-6, 7-8 and 9-11 at a presentation event at Magna in July.
