Second Sheffield Residents Receives Award from Home Office
A second Sheffield resident has been recognised by the Home Office for taking a stand against anti-social behaviour in the city.
Deborah Byrne won the Home Offices’ Respect Award for Taking a Stand in recognition for tackling anti-social behaviour in the Parson Cross area, which she received at a special event in Birmingham on 19th April.
This is the second award of its type given to residents in Sheffield. June MacFarlane and Ann Kemp, aka Cagney and Lacey, also from Parson Cross, received the same award in March this year.
Deborah, who is an active member of Lindsay Tenants and Residents Association, helped set up multi-agency drop in sessions to enable those suffering from anti-social behaviour to come forward and report anti-social behaviour in a safe and confidential environment.
Sheffield Homes’ Anti-Social Behaviour Team nominated both winners for the award. Nicola Somerset, Housing Co-ordinator at Sheffield Homes said,
“Deborah is instrumental in helping Sheffield Homes to raise awareness of the importance of reporting incidents of anti-social behaviour to the Police and Sheffield Homes. She was also one of the key people involved in setting up a pilot project with Sheffield Homes aimed at supporting vulnerable people and reducing anti-social behaviour being caused by young residents.”
Deborah added, “I wanted to take action to try to do something about the lack of respect the people causing anti-social behaviour had for other people living in the area. It’s only a small minority of people causing trouble but it makes a big difference to everyone else’s lives. The help I’ve been able to offer others has meant that more people feel confident about reporting anti-social behaviour.”
