High Sheriff visits Winn Gardens to see Flood Repair Work in Action

Winn Gardens’ resident Makala Clarke showed off her newly refurbished home to South Yorkshire’s High Sheriff Colonel Jonathan Hunt when he visited the Winn Gardens estate, Middlewood on Monday 17 March following the devastating floods in June last year.

Following an invitation from Sheffield Homes Chair Professor Tony Crook, The High Sheriff saw for himself the hard work that has taken place there to help get residents back to normality and back into their homes. The majority of Homes are now completed or nearing completion.

The High Sheriff was also introduced to four local young people from the estate who have been offered training places with Kier, Sheffield Homes’ partner contractor. The trainees were all involved with the flood repair programme at Winn Gardens.

During his visit Colonel Jonathan Hart paid a visit to the Winn Gardens Nursery and met with children and staff along with Kier’s mascot Kieran and presented gifts to all the children present.

Sheffield Homes’ Chief Executive Peter Morton says: “Staff members at Sheffield Homes and our contractors put in a huge amount of effort to help residents of the estate get back to normality.  The help and support of the people living on the estate was truly commendable. The High Sheriff will be able to see for himself how the estate and our residents have come back from the devastation of the floods and the courage and good spirits they have shown.”

Kier Sheffield, training officer, Andy Biggin commented, “Kier is investing in the city to make a long-term impact and an ongoing contribution to employability, as well as providing local jobs for local people.

“The three young people are from the Winn Gardens estate and assisted in the clean-up after the flood devastation last year.  Their contribution to the community was recognised and consequentially we offered them a training opportunity at Kier Sheffield in conjunction with Sheffield Homes.

“I am pleased to say that they are working well, gaining multi-trade experience and are an essential part of completing outstanding flood works on the properties in Winn Gardens”.
