Tree Planting Scheme Branches out at Wharncliffe Side

Sheffield Homes' tenants will be getting a helping hand from Wharncliffe Side Primary School pupils and the local Tenants’ and Residents’ Association when 2 Cherry trees are planted at the junction of Dixon Drive and Brightholmlee Lane, Wharncliffe Side on Thursday 10 April at 11.00am.

This is part of an ongoing partnership between Sheffield Homes and Sheffield City Council’s Trees & Woodland’s department over a strategic tree renewal programme. It is being delivered through community forestry projects to target those areas where further tree planting will bring about positive enhancement of people’s surroundings and benefits to both the immediate and wider environment.

Sheffield Homes' North West Housing Area Manager Surjan Tiwana says: “We see this as a good way of getting young people interested and taking part in the local community.   We are very keen to work together with local communities to identify areas where we can plant new trees and improve the existing stock.  The trees chosen for this scheme will bring the maximum benefits to local people and the environment. This project will help towards making the city an even nicer place to live for today’s residents and future generations.”

Sheffield City Council Community Forester, Jez Platts says: “These two trees are just some of the 460 trees which are being planted in Sheffield by the end of April.  This is a fantastic project to renew trees in local estates, keeping Sheffield the green city it is and ideal for young people to learn about the importance of looking after trees, the benefits they have on the environment and its also very enjoyable “
