Minorities encouraged to get their voices heard
Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) tenants are being encouraged to take part in their own housing forum, thanks to a Sheffield Homes initiative. The latest in a series of Black and Minority Ethnic Tenants’ Forums takes place on Monday 16 May at Sheffield’s Hilton Hotel.
Anyone wanting to attend must register by Friday 13 May.
Usamah Rahmani, a tenant from Nether Edge who has attended the first two BME Forums, said: “The best way for tenants from the black and ethnic communities to put their views across is by attending these forums. It won’t solve everything but it will help improve things and get your voice across.”
This latest event will focus on how tenants would like the forum to work. Sheffield Homes is also working with Voluntary Action Sheffield to draw up a programme for training and support packages, so the BME Forum can become a successful group.
“Sheffield Homes wants to support BME tenants as best it can, to take ownership of its own forum,” said Janet Parry, Director of Corporate Strategy for Sheffield Homes. ”We’ve already run two highly successful events like these explaining how the housing service is run and addressing tenants’ queries and concerns. We’re looking forward to moving one step further with this event, so I’d like to encourage everyone to register.”
The event runs from 5.45pm-8.45pm. An interpretation service will be provided along with Halal/vegetarian foods. Sheffield Homes is also covering travel and childcare expenses.
