Prevention Is Better Than Cure!

Laura McCall & Tony Currie
Sheffield Homes has teamed up with former Sheffield United star Tony Currie to kick off an anti-social behaviour prevention scheme in local schools.

The Sheffield Homes’ Neighbourhood Action Team (NAT) has been working relentlessly in primary schools across Sheffield, to help prevent anti-social behaviour, in the belief that prevention is better than the cure.

St Thomas More School was the latest primary school to benefit from the work of the NAT members, who played games with the children themed around anti-social behaviour.

The NAT works closely with other organisations to deliver these class sessions and presentations.

Sarah Morton, Police Community Support Officer (PCSO), comments;

“It's important that the PCSO'S are involved and interact with other agencies such as Sheffield Homes to build up strong working relationships. We are all striving to achieve the same aims. It's important to work with children from an early age, so that we are seen not only as a person in authority, but also as a friendly face and someone they can trust to sort out any anti-social behaviour problems they may have in their community.”

A competition was set for the children to design a poster on what they would like their community rules to be. The winner Laura McCall had her winning design made into a bookmark and was presented with a certificate at the school presentation by former footballer Tony Currie.

Delia Kay, Headteacher at St Thomas More School, said

“I feel that the Neighbourhood Action Team’s work has been truly worthwhile and the children still spoke about the issues for weeks after. I would be very pleased for the team to re-visit our school & do more anti-social behaviour prevention work in the future.”

Due to the successful work of the Neighbourhood Action Team, the pioneering Sheffield Homes anti-social behaviour prevention scheme is now set to be rolled out across the north of the city.
