A Special Spring Clean for Darnall Community Park

Darnall Community Park received a special spring clean just in time for the warm weather thanks to the team work of local organisations.

A special team made up of Sheffield Homes Estates Officers and other key organisations including The Friends of High Hazels Park and Sheffield City Council’s Parks and Countryside team, Street force, the Darnall Area Panel, local volunteers and South Yorkshire Housing Association lead the way.

The major clean up was planned following a meeting held between the team at the end of March. This was following talks with residents, who wanted to see the popular park spruced up,

The team hosted the clean up on Monday 12th May, including machine sweeping of the pavements, removal of fly tipping as well as litter picking, the maintenance of communal green spaces including sprucing up hedges and borders. The clean up forms part of a wider Green Spaces Regeneration Project which is aimed at creating, protecting and improving green havens for local communities to enjoy.

Paul Campbell, local resident and chairman of The Friends of High Hazel Park said: “Darnall Community Park has been a focal point for local residents, since it was first set up in the 1970’s, but over the years it has suffered from littering and vandalism. However, since local organisations have teamed up, they regularly involve local residents and schools in consultations about how to improve the park. This has created a real sense of ownership amongst residents and the park is generally well looked after these days.”

Brigitt Cowen, Area Manager at Sheffield Homes, added: “This is a perfect example of local organisations working together for the benefit everyone living and working in the area.  Team working on projects such as this not only improve the environment but also ensure that Sheffield Homes continues to provide the best estate services possible for our customers.”
