Help to shape housing services in Sheffield

Could you help run a Company that makes a real difference to thousands of people’s homes, lives and communities?

Would you like to influence the future of housing services in Sheffield?

Sheffield Homes was set up to manage, maintain and improve council homes across the city and, in the space of three years, has become one of the best housing organisations in the country.

Now it is looking for enthusiastic, dedicated and committed people to join its Board of Directors.

This year there are four vacancies for council tenant members and one for an independent member.

The Board makes decisions that will continually improve the city’s housing services and the standard of council homes, overseeing the country’s biggest Decent Homes programme, worth around £669 million.

Jack Foster has been a Sheffield Homes Tenant Director since the Company was formed in April 2004.

He said: “As a Board Director you are very much involved in what’s going on. Just recently I was out and about visiting homes that have been improved under the Decent Homes programme and reporting back to the contractors. It’s not all about meetings.

“As well as caring about the community where you live, you have to be interested in making the whole city a better place to live. I have seen huge changes over the last three years and am pleased to have been a part of it.

“I enjoy this job and want to continue doing it for as long as I can.”

Directors attend Board meetings every month and work closely with senior officers from Sheffield Homes.

John Loveless, who runs the Sheffield Homes Governance Team, said: “The Board of Directors provide us with strategic leadership, make key decisions and monitor performance.

“It’s important that applicants to these posts are genuinely interested in the communities they serve and are passionate about providing high quality services that reflect our customers’ needs and aspirations.

“We provide full training to Board Members to help them manage their new role and responsibilities, as well as expenses such as travel or childcare.

“We encourage applications from ethnic minorities, young people and women to reflect the diversity of the population we serve.”
