Junior Wardens Take Charge in Burngreave
Youngsters in Burngreave have the chance to be Junior Community Wardens for the summer holidays thanks to a special scheme with Sheffield Homes’ Community Wardens. The Burngreave Community Wardens team, which is funded by Burngreave New Deal, patrols the area seven days a week, taking action to make Burngreave a safe and pleasant place to live. The Wardens also help to keep the area clean and safe and provide a first point of contact for residents.
The six-week Junior Community Warden programme will involve a wide range of individual and group projects and special activity days with the emergency services. The events will be held every Wednesday afternoon starting on Wednesday 25th July.
Junior Wardens will have the chance to visit Sheffield’s fire service including a trip to the fire station to learn more about fire safety and the work that the fire service does. They will also get the opportunity to visit South Yorkshire Police and the dog-handling unit to learn about crime prevention and good citizenship.
As well as days out the Junior Wardens will also learn more about the role of Community Wardens and take part in special horticultural and environmental projects.
Brigitt Cowen, Area Manager at Sheffield Homes explained, “The aim of the Programme is to bring young people in Burngreave together to learn about good citizenship, the environment and the role of the emergency service and Community Wardens, in a fun and exciting way. At the end of the Programme we will be taking all our Junior Wardens for a special surprise fun day out.”
This unique experience is open to young people aged between 6 and 11 years from the Burngreave area. Places are limited and are available on a first come first served basis. Parents can register their child by contacting the Community Wardens Team via 293 0000.
