Burngreave youth take part in new world record walking bus scheme
Young people in Burngreave walked their way into the record books this week by taking part in the UK’s largest simultaneous walking bus.
Sixty children from Firshill Junior School and St Catharine’s School took part in the Sheffield leg of the world-recording attempt as part of the Burngreave Walking Bus Scheme. Across the UK 80,000 children took part, culminating in a new world record walking bus.
The Burngreave Walking Bus was a pilot set up by Sheffield Homes’ Burngreave Community Wardens to encourage children in the area to live a healthy lifestyle by staying fit and active.
The UK world record attempt was set up by road safety charity Brake, who aim to prevent death and injury on the roads through education of all road users and campaigning for Government improvements to road safety. The UK record attempt was sponsored by Asda.
Glyn Hitchen, Assistant Area Manager at Sheffield Homes said, “This is a great project to be involved in. The Walking Bus is just one initiative where we are teaching children about road safety, staying healthy, eating well, environmental issues and being a good citizen. We are delighted to have been able to take part in the event and help local youngster mark their place in the record books.”
The Burngreave Community Wardens team, which is funded by Burngreave New Deal, also patrols the area seven days a week, taking action to make Burngreave a safe and pleasant place to live. The Wardens also help to keep the area clean and safe and provide a first point of contact for residents.
