'Larger than life' man remembered in stunning fashion
A permanent tribute to a tireless worker and long-standing tenant association member has just been given the stamp of approval by his widow.
Brian Senior - who sadly died earlier this year - was seen as a good friend to everyone who lived on Wincobank's Flower Estate and a group of the community's young people showed their own support by helping incorporate him in a stunning mural.
The artwork is now sited on the rear wall of garages on Clover Gardens.
It incorporates flowers to tie in with the estate's name, a Brigantine tribal pattern to represent the ancient Wincobank hill fort and a giant portrait of Brian Senior.
Dot Senior, widow of Brain Senior, who visited the mural for the first time a few days ago said it was "a fitting tribute" to her late husband.
The idea was the brainchild of Sheffield Homes' Neighbourhood Warden scheme workers who suggested it as a way to forge links with the young people of the area.
They enlisted the help of Chris Roberts of Sheffield City Council's Park & Countryside Rangers Service and Foundry Street artist Neil Antcliffe, who met with young people from the Flower Estate to help create the mural's design.
Once the site had been cleared, the outlines of the design were sketched onto the wall.
Artist Neil Antcliffe demonstrated various spray painting techniques to the young people who spent four days working on the project.
Gregory Rippon, Sheffield Homes' Housing Co-ordinator, said: "The unveiling of the mural has not only been a fitting tribute to Brian Senior, it has also shown the talent and community feel of the Flower Estate and demonstrated the effectiveness of Sheffield Homes' Neighbourhood Warden scheme and their ability to engage with young people and improve the quality of life for the whole community."
The project was sponsored by B&Q and the Flower Estate Family Action.
