Sheffield Homes helps to combat identity fraud
People visiting Stocksbridge Housing Office and Hillsborough First Point can get their unwanted documents shredded, destroying any chance of criminals getting their hands on valuable personal information.
The new service was provided following consultation with community group Stay Safe and Secure in Stocksbridge, where a customer raised the idea.
Identity fraud is one of the fastest growing crimes in the country, with thieves stealing personal information to open bank accounts and get credit cards, loans, state benefits, passports and driving licenses in other people’s names.
This is often done by taking documents from rubbish or by making contact with their victims and pretending to be from a legitimate organisation.
Identity fraud can affect personal financial circumstances, as well as costing the Government and financial services millions of pounds a year.

Victims of identity theft may have difficulty getting loans, credit cards or a mortgage until the matter is sorted out.
“We always listen to customer feedback and act on it whenever we can,” said Surjan Tiwana, Sheffield Homes North West Area Manager. “This was a brilliant suggestion, which resulted in a service that could save someone a lot of heartache and trouble.
“We would encourage our customers to use these new shredding services to destroy bills, receipts, credit or debit card slips, bank statements and unwanted post. These are things that should never be thrown away complete.”
Sheffield Homes customers can provide feedback - including comments, suggestions and complaints – about services by phone, letter and email. A leaflet is widely available, publicising the scheme and how we deal with customer feedback.
The new shredding has now been rolled out to all Sheffield Homes in-person access points and sheltered schemes in the future.
