Nominate Young for New Year Community Awards

Young people living in the north of Sheffield will be recognised in a special New Years honours event.  The Southey & Owlerton New Year Awards acknowledges the different ways that young people are making a positive impact in the community.

The organisers, Sheffield Homes, Owlerton/Southey Green Area Panel and SOAR (Southey & Owlerton Area Regeneration), are asking local residents to nominate young champions for the awards.

Cllr Gill Furniss, Chair of Owlerton/Southey Green Area Panel said; “Young people often get blamed for many of the problems within communities but in Southey and Owlerton we have many young people who do great work and deserve recognition. The Area Panel is keen to see even more young people involved in both the area panel itself and the wider community as a whole”.

The awards are split into three age categories, 0-11, 12-16 and 17-25 years.  Local residents can nominate young people that they feel have made a difference to communities in the north of Sheffield.  Examples include community or voluntary work, fund raising, special projects or simply going over and above the call of duty to help others.

Rachel Dawson, Community Engagement Officer at Sheffield Homes said, “This is an excellent opportunity to recognise the brilliant work that young people do.  It’s really encouraging to see our younger residents come together to help to improve the lives of other people in their communities, which is why we are urging all local residents to nominate young people for these awards.”

Nomination forms are available now from the Wordsworth Avenue Housing Office, 333 Wordsworth Avenue or local libraries.  Alternatively, residents can telephone Rachel Dawson on 0114 2930000, Andy Wier on 0114 2037796 or Steve Rundell on 0114 2496194.

Closing date for entries is Friday 22nd December.  Judging will take place on 11th January 2007 and a list of short listed young residents will be announced shortly after.  The final awards ceremony will be held at Sheffield Wednesday Football Club on 15th February, where winners will receive their awards and prizes from a surprise guest plus local MP David Blunkett.
