All aboard the Burngreave walking bus
Youngsters at a Burngreave school are getting a healthy and safe start to their day by ‘jumping on board’ a new travel initiative.
Children from Firshill Community Primary School are putting on their walking shoes and joining the Burngreave Walking Bus to travel to school. The pilot scheme, which was set up by Sheffield Homes’ Burngreave Community Wardens, aims to encourage children to live a healthy lifestyle by staying fit and active.
The initiative has had a great start with lots of interest from parents and pupils alike. The bus collects its first “passengers” from Scott Road at 8.25am then picking up at Blaton Road and Firs Hill Crescent before reaching its final destination at school for 8.50am.
Graham Wright, Housing Coordinator at Sheffield Homes said, “This is a great project to be involved in. The Walking Bus is just one initiative where we are teaching children about staying healthy, eating well, environmental issues and being a good citizen.”
If the pilot is successful Sheffield Homes hopes to roll out the project to other schools in the Burngreave area.
The Burngreave Community Wardens team, which is funded by Burngreave New Deal, patrols the area seven days a week, taking action to make Burngreave a safe and pleasant place to live. The Wardens also help to keep the area clean and safe and provide a first point of contact for residents.
