Pupils raise a Racquet at Stocksbridge Badminton Tournament

David Kershaw,14, from Stocksbridge High School, winner in Under 16s age group, receives his medal
Sheffield Homes ensured senior school children in the North West of the city had their racquets at the ready for an organised Badminton Tournament held on Monday 10 December at Stocksbridge Leisure Centre.

Sheffield Homes funded the event with the aim of reducing anti-social behaviour in the area and improving fitness, co-ordination and encouraging team building.  It was organised in partnership with Sheffield City Council’s Activity Sheffield and Stocksbridge Junior Badminton Club.

The Tournament was set up after the success of Sheffield Homes’  ‘Blast-Off’ Football Competition held at the Leisure Centre in October, which attracted many youngsters in the area to come along and take part in other sports activities including rounders, Kwick Cricket, squash and tug-of-war aimed at the 13+ age groups.

The winners were presented with trophies and medals on the night by Sheffield Homes’ Neighbourhood Wardens.

There was also a badminton tournament held for junior school children on Monday 3 December.

Surjan Tiwana, Sheffield Homes’ North West Area Manager says: “At Sheffield Homes we try to deliver long term benefits to communities and it is excellent that we can support young people in the local area to join in activities such as this. “

“Our Wardens play a crucial role towards reducing anti-social behaviour and improving the environment and when they get involved with events such as this and meet the young people in an informal setting it helps to improve relationships with our communities.”
