Dinosaur art should be a roaring success at Sheffield’s own Jurassic Park
Children in the Upperthorpe area of Sheffield will be getting all fired up about dinosaurs this Saturday as an innovative art and environmental project comes to a close.
The Art in the Park project has been drawing in the crowds at Philadelphia Green Space on Fox Road for the past two weeks and will culminate in an event this Saturday, 25th August, from 2-5pm.
Youngsters have already made footprints and dinosaur heads in clay. On Saturday, they will colour their masterpieces with glaze and fire them in a Raku kiln, bringing their prehistoric creations to life. They will also position the footprint stepping stones in the park.
The Art in the Park events are organised by volunteers, open to people of all ages and free of charge. The aim is to encourage people to explore their urban environment, work together, get to know their local park and meet new people.
The project is organised in partnership with the University of Sheffield’s Change Project and the Netherthorpe, Hillsborough and Walkley Area Panel. It also has a host of supporters, including Sheffield Homes, which maintains and helps develop Philadelphia Green Space.
Surjan Tiwana, North West Area Manager for Sheffield Homes, said: “We are delighted to support this project, which really encourages local people to make use of their parks and open spaces.
“We do look after this park and have been involved with initiatives in the past to improve it further, such as working with Sheffield Wildlife Trust to plant fruit trees and arranging for picnic tables to be sited there.
“Anything that helps attract people to the park and appreciate their local environment is welcomed wholeheartedly by us.”
At Saturday’s final event there will be circus activities, painting with easels, chalking and free healthy food and drink.
