Junior wardens meet furry friends at South Yorkshire Police

Junior wardens
Youngsters in Burngreave who have joined the Burngreave Junior Wardens scheme this summer, paid a special visit to South Yorkshire Police’s dog training unit to learn more about the Police and how they train and use Police dogs.

The Junior Wardens Scheme, which was set up by Sheffield Homes’ Burngreave Community Wardens and funded by Burngreave New Deal for Communities, aims to help local children work together and learn about safety, good citizenship and environmental projects.

The six-week Junior Community Warden programme includes individual and group projects as well as special activity days with the emergency services.

On their trip to Niagara, the Wardens will also learn more about crime prevention and good citizenship.

Inspector Jon Ekwubiri from the Burngreave Safer Neighbourhood Team said “This is an excellent scheme, focusing on keeping young people safe and promoting positive citizenship.  The programme is a creative way of helping local children learn more about the emergency services, and to help them think about personal safety and how to avoid potentially hazardous situations as they grow up.”

Junior Wardens have also visit Sheffield’s fire service at Elm Lane fire station to find out about fire safety and the role of the fire service.

Brigitt Cowen, Area Manager at Sheffield Homes explained, “The aim of the Programme is to bring young people in Burngreave together to learn about good citizenship, the environment and the role of the emergency service and Community Wardens, in a fun and exciting way.”

This unique experience is open to young people aged between 6 and 11 years from the Burngreave area.

The Burngreave Community Wardens team, which is funded by Burngreave New Deal, patrols the area seven days a week, taking action to make Burngreave a safe and pleasant place to live.  The Wardens also help to keep the area clean and safe and provide a first point of contact for residents.
