Sheffield Homes Handback residents jump on board
Members of Handbank Social Club are celebrating after taking delivery of a new minibus, after nearly three years of fundraising work.
Members of the club who all live at the Handbank Sheltered Housing Scheme in Gleadless Valley, managed by Sheffield Homes raised a total of £17,000 to buy the bus, which has wheel chair access and seats up to 17 people.
Residents of the scheme already regularly enjoy evening trips, day trips, long weekends and even foreign holidays together and the new minibus will mean that it’s much easier and cheaper to take these trips together.
Norma Rawson, Warden at Handbank says “We had to put our thinking caps on to come up with some novel ideas about how we could raise such a large sum of money! One of the greatest successes was to hold a series of fundraising concerts. I’d like to thank The Carlton Club at Gleadless, Windsor Public House, Farm Road Club and Hackenthorpe Club who have all been fantastic, holding special concert nights, allowing us to use the venue, donating prizes and rounding up proceeds. I’d also like to thank all the performers and helpers that made the nights so special, particularly Lucy Anne Carnell and her husband Jamie.”
She added “Tenants and their families have also made very generous donations and we’ve had great support from Sheffield United and local companies such as W2 Network, Parkgate Frozen foods and Kier Sheffield; who’ve paid for sign writing on the side of the bus.”
