Decent Homes workers give free makeover to community centre

Kind-hearted workers who had helped transform scores of homes on a Sheffield estate left residents with a special parting gift.

They gave up their free time to give the Brindley Community Centre a makeover and even donated and fitted a brand new kitchen.

The help was so appreciated by some local people that nearby tenants cooked bacon 'butties' in their homes to keep the workers well fed.

Sheffield Homes' contractors, Connaught and Lovell, had spent five months carrying out extensive refurbishments to around 75 homes on the Brindley, Mundella Estate as part of the city's £700m Decent Homes programme.

To help mark the completion of this phase of work, the contractors decided to work on the community centre during a weekend off, with the support of Sheffield Homes.

"As we had finished the majority of the work on the estate, we wanted to put something back into the community and this seemed like an excellent idea," said David Thorpe, Project Manager of Connaught.

"The Tenants and Residents Association use the hall as do a number of other groups so we know that it is a facility that is really valuable to the local community."

Sheffield Homes' Decent Homes programme is the largest housing investment programme in the country.

It will mean that over 50,000 council-owned homes will meet or exceed the Decent Homes standard laid down by Government.

The phase of work on Brindley Mundella has included fitting new kitchens, bathrooms, doors and windows where required.
