Tripe Unlocks WW2 Secrets
Pigs trotters, tripe and chicklin and bag were just some of the 1940s delicacies on the menu for a group that re-lived their World War Two experiences recently.
The veterans, who all live at the city’s Cambridge Court sheltered accommodation scheme, dressed in period costume – both civvies and uniform – and shared their memories of a city at war and the sacrifices they made.
The accommodation’s community room was decked out in wartime memorabilia, footage of Sheffield in the Blitz was screened and Glenn Miller supplied the background music.
The WW2 survivors, many now in their nineties, were also visited by members of South Yorkshire Police in 1940s uniform.
There was also a forties-style buffet inspired by the residents.
The idea for the event originally came from Sheffield Homes employee Linda Rogers – Warden at Cambridge Court.
Linda said: “Our residents have lived such amazing lives and have so many stories to tell. We couldn’t think of a better way – on the 60th anniversary of VJ Day – to encourage them to share their memories of Sheffield in WW2 and allow us to record them for future generations.”
Veterans attending the day included some that stayed in Sheffield throughout WW2 helping the war effort and many that fought overseas in places like Monte Casino and Alexandria.
