Decent Homes builders cultivate a sense of community
Local builders who are working on the Sheffield Homes Decent Homes programme have been able to create much needed secure storage facilities for the Phillimore Youth Club. The project was carried out by a crack team from the Wates Living Space, as part of their annual Community Day.
The much needed storage space was created in the assembly hall of Phillimore Community Primary School where the Youth Club meet on Thursday evenings. The lack of secure storage was a serious problem for the club, who need a secure place to keep games and electrical equipment.
Wates Living Space are one of seven partners working on the Sheffield Homes Decent Homes programme and will are carrying out work on around 850 homes in the Darnall area this year.
John Flower, Framework Manager from Wates explains: “Every year Wates holds a Community Day when all staff go out and provide help to local organisations. Although it was a tough assignment to get this work done in one day, we were up for the challenge and really enjoyed working with the school and youth club.”
Jackie Naylor, Vice Chair of the Youth Club who teaches at the school is delighted that Wates were able to provide the storage facility. ”We can’t thank Wates enough! The youth club provides a really important service for young people in the local area and we hope that the new facilities will encourage pupils not to lose touch and keep coming back to attend the club.”
Simon Senior, Decent Homes Project Manager says “Wates only started work on the Decent Homes programme about eight months ago, but they’ve already shown themselves really keen to get involved in the local community. Not only are they committed to transforming customer homes, but they are passionate about improving life for everyone in the local area. “
70 projects have been undertaken in all by Wates Community Day teams this year. It’s estimated that more than 6,000 adults and children across the UK benefited from the companies Community Day activities.
