Tenants tell stories of Sheffield in the sixties
Sheffield Homes customers at Callow Tower Block on Callow Place in Gleadless Valley will be opening their doors this week (Thursday 6th and Saturday 8th September), so that members of the public can see what a typical tower block built in the 1960s looks like and share their experiences of what it’s been like to live in the blocks.
The tours of the tower block will be part of a heritage week organised by Sheffield’s Civic Trust. Callow Tower Block was built in 1963 and provides homes to over 60 Sheffield Homes’ customers.
Lisa Lobue, Community Engagement Officer at Sheffield Homes explains “When the Civic Trust approached us to show off the block we were delighted; people sometimes have a negative image of what its like to live in a tower block, so this was an excellent opportunity to change people’s minds.”
Lisa continues “We wanted to open up blocks so that people can get a real feel for what it’s like to have a home in one of these blocks and to enable members of the public to chat to residents about their experiences of living here. Callow Tower Block is an excellent example of good sixties architecture; people really enjoy living here and there’s a great sense of community.”
As well as providing an opportunity to see the block itself, the tour will also include a chance to view an eco-friendly wood burning biomass boiler that provides heating and hot water to all the six blocks.
There will be two guided tours of the block on both days:
Thursday 6th September : 10.00 am to 12 noon
- tours will take place at 10.30 am and 11.30 am
Saturday 8th September : 10.30 am to 12.30 pm
- tours will take place at 11am and 12 noon.
