Junior Neighbourhood Wardens are Tree-mendous!
Sheffield Homes will receive a helping hand from junior neighbourhood wardens in the south east of the city this week when they help to keep their community greener by digging in to plant trees at Spa View Lane, Hackenthorpe.
Many of Sheffield’s trees have stood for well over 100 years, making the city more attractive, healthier and habitable. But many thousands of these are fast approaching the end of their natural lifespan and a new generation is needed to take over from these ancient guardians.
South East Area Manager Shaun Nolan said, “The aim of the Junior Neighbourhood Warden scheme is to bring young people in the south east together to learn about good citizenship, the environment and the role of the Neighbourhood Wardens, and is proving very successful. The youngsters will be able to plant something which will grow with them throughout their lives and the trees can be enjoyed by residents for years to come".
The youngsters who attend Gleadless Primary, Stradbroke Primary and Halfway Junior Schools will don gloves and pick up spades to help Sheffield Homes’ Community Forester Jez Platts plant 3 Maidenhair trees, 2 Pride of India trees and 1 Whitebeam tree.
Jez Platts, Sheffield City Council Community Forester, says: “Community forestry is all about involving everybody in contributing to the regeneration of Sheffield's all important urban forest in order for current and future generations to enjoy.”
Councillors Shaffaq Mohamed and Mike Pye will also be in attendance.
