Mount View Lodge Makes New Friends Thanks to Open Day!
Sheffield Homes has stepped in as a national survey* reveals more than one million older people say they often or always feel lonely. Residents at Sheffield Homes’ Sheltered Housing Scheme, Mount View Lodge at Norton Lees, have made new friends thanks to their Get Involved Open Day which was held in October.
The sheltered housing staff were keen to promote Mount View Lodge as a social centre for the community following on from the success of the POPPIE project (active ageing project) which has been running at the Scheme since last year and has proved very successful in bringing the residents together and getting them involved in activities such as chairobics, art and craft classes and days out to the coast.
The open day proved a great success, so much so that a local residential care home in the area, having seen the article for the open day in The Star, contacted Mount View Lodge Warden Pat Stokes, to invite the residents over for one of their coffee afternoons which included music and live entertainment.
Pat explains, “We had a lovely time at Norton Lees Hall Care Home. We were made to feel very welcome and have made lots of new friends who have now been invited over to Mount View Lodge to join in our activities. The aim of our open day was to meet new people and get the elderly community joining in with us and for our residents to get out and about making new friends and it seems to be paying off. It’s nice for the residents to have made new friends so near to their own homes, as this particular part of Norton Lees doesn't have much in the way of community resources, now they can get together both here and at Norton Lees Hall to enjoy coffee mornings and other activities. We’re also looking at involving some of our other sheltered schemes and providing transport for them to come over and join us at these coffee afternoons and make it a regular get together!”
