What is a Decent Home?
This part of the website is dedicated to helping you understand the Decent Homes process.
Basically, a Decent Home is one that is windproof, weather tight, warm and has modern facilities.
A Decent Home is one that:
- Meets the current minimum legal standard for housing
- Is in a reasonable state of repair
- Has reasonably modern facilities, like kitchens and bathrooms
- Has heating and insulation
To find out more about these Government standards please visit the Communities and Local Government (new window) website.
The Sheffield Decent Homes Standard
Sheffield Homes work in partnership with Sheffield City Council (new window) and our five partnering contractors, Henry Boot plc (new window), Keepmoat (new window), Kier Sheffield LLP (new window), Lovell Partnerships Ltd (new window) and Wates Living Space (new window), to improve all the council homes in the city to the Decent Homes Standard by 2010.
This is the biggest Decent Homes Programme in the country.
Over £700 million will be invested, over 200 jobs have already been created and we are well on our way to recruiting over 500 apprentices, of whom nearly 100 are already training with the contractors.
To meet the Sheffield Decent Homes Standard, your home must:
- Be free from damp
- Have a kitchen less than 20 years old
- Have a bathroom less than 20 years old
- Have an efficient heating system and insulation
- Be in a good state of repair
- Have double glazed windows
- Have secure external doors
Greenhill/Bradway resident Ike Hill said:
"It's a good thing. We're going to gain a lot from the Decent Homes programme, even though it will take a bit of time. Ours is a maisonette and our kitchen hasn't had anything done to it for over 20 years."
