What are the costs of Sheltered Housing?
You pay weekly rent and a service charge (where applicable) for the heating and hot water in your property and/or towards the heating in communal areas of the scheme.
There is an added support charge to cover the warden service and City Wide Alarm (new window). If you are already in receipt of Housing Benefit you will not have to pay this charge.
If you are on a low income you can apply to have an assessment to see if you are entitled to any assistance, this is called a Fairer Charging Assessment.
You will receive help and advice on claiming Welfare and/or Housing Benefit at the start of your tenancy.

Who is eligible for Sheltered Housing?
- Anyone aged over 60 - there is no upper age limit
- Anyone aged 55-59 with a physical or learning disability
- People living alone or couples. For couples, at least one person must fit the age requirement
How can I access Sheltered Housing?
You can access sheltered housing through the Sheffield Property Shop (new window) or any local Area Housing Offices.
You can also be referred through the Medical Visitors Team, Social Services or via the Health Service. They will complete an assessment form and fax this to the Sheltered Housing Team.
What does the warden do?
The warden provides general support to residents and in emergency situations - such as a sudden illness or fall - will contact relatives and call a doctor or the emergency services as required. He or she is in daily contact with each resident via visits or intercom alarm.
