How to join the Housing Register

To join the Housing Register you will need to complete a registration form.

You can get a registration form and or help with completing it from either:

  • Contacting the Vacant Tenancy Management Unit on 0114 272 5363
  • You can also join the Housing Register by visiting the Sheffield Property Shop (new window) website.
  • Alternatively, you can download the Housing Register Form at the bottom of this page. You can return a completed registration form to any local Area Housing office, First Point or Sheffield Property Shop.

We will register you from the date we receive your registration form. Once we have done this, you will receive a letter confirming your registration date and your registration number.

You will also receive a separate letter advising you of your PIN (Personal Identification Number). This will enable you to place bids via the Sheffield Property Shop website.

Sheffield City Council (new window) works in partnership with the Housing Associations in the city, so if you join the Council's Housing Register you can also be nominated for some Housing Association Properties.

In addition, each Housing Association keeps its own register and you can apply to join these individually.

Who Can Apply?

Sheffield City Council operates an open Housing Register.

Anyone over 16 can join the Housing Register, but they cannot usually be offered a property until they are at least 18. You can register alone or you can register jointly with your partner or another adult who will be living with you.

In some circumstances Sheffield Homes will suspend an applicant's registration, for example if they have behaved anti-socially or have a history of rent arrears or other debts to the Housing Service.

The Housing Act 1996 prevents Local Authorities from offering a property to some people because of their immigration status.

Supporting Applicants

Supporting applicants through the housing process is an important part of our service.
This can include:

  • Providing information in languages other than English
  • Assistance with completing the application form
  • Support with the bidding process

The Housing Registration Form asks questions that will indicate to us if you may need further help or assistance.
