Sheltered Housing

Newton Croft Sheltered Scheme
If you are over 60 and looking for a home with added security and support then Sheltered Housing could be for you. We have 35 schemes across the city giving you plenty of choice.

What is Sheltered Housing?

Sheltered Housing is ideal for people over 60 who enjoy independant living. It aims to provide convenient and comfortable housing where tenants have their own home within a community and can come and go as they please. Tenants are able to retain their independance, make friends and take part in a wider social life if they so wish.

What does the Accommodation Include?

Generally accommodation is unfurnished, however we can offer furnished properties if that is preferred. Some of our ground floor dwellings or upper floor (in schemes with lifts) are suitable for people with disabilities. There is also an alarm system known as 'City Wide Alarms' (new window) in every property which provides 24 hour emergency response.
If you would like to view any of our flats or studios we would be happy to accomodate you, including assistance with travel arrangements if you have no other means.

Types of Accommodation

  • Studio Flats
Consist of a bedsitting room, separate kitchen, toilet and wash hand basin.

  • Flats
Are designed for one or two people and are fully self-contained with a bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom.

  • Bungalows
Are fully self-contained and consist of one or more bedrooms, living room, kitchen and bathroom.

What does the Service Provide?

An important part of a Sheltered Housing Scheme is the presence of a member of staff, whose office is linked by an alarm to every tenant’s home. Their main duty is to provide general counselling and support to each of the tenants. In an emergency, such as a sudden illness or a fall, staff will contact relatives, call a doctor or the emergency services as required. Staff are usually at the scheme most of the time Monday to Friday during the day. When staff are off duty all emergencies are dealt with by City Wide Alarms, who employ mobile wardens.
