Applying for Council and Housing Association Properties in Sheffield
Sheffield Homes operates an open housing register. Anyone over 16 can join the housing register, although Sheffield City Council (new window) will not usually offer them a property until they are over 18.
An applicant who is under 18 can be registered but their registration will be suspended until they reach their 18th birthday.
You can register alone, or you can register jointly with your partner or another adult who will be living with you.
Sheffield Homes works in partnership with the Housing Associations in the city, so if you join the housing register you can also make a bid for some Housing Association properties in the city. Housing Associations’ policies may differ and they will make the final decision on who they offer their properties to.
In addition, each Housing Association keeps its own register and you can apply to join these individually.
Exclusions - Anyone who is subject to immigration control within the meaning of the Asylum and Immigration Act 1996 is not a qualifying person and cannot be registered. The Secretary of State may prescribe other persons or classes of persons who are not qualifying persons.
