Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Tenants Forum

Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Tenants Forum

Tenants at our first BME Forum
We want all our tenants to be involved in a way which suits them.  Whilst Sheffield has strong, active Tenants and Residents Associations, black and minority ethnic tenants are seriously underrepresented and so the BME Tenants Forum was established to try to redress the balance.

The last Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Tenants Forum was held on 31st July.  Tenants and residents called the shots at the 8th Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Tenants Forum with a special play from theatre company Dead Earnest. The play helped people think about different ways of dealing with racism, harassment and disputes. If members of the audience thought that a character in the play wasn’t dealing with a problem in the right way then they stopped the play and changed it

The next BME Forum will be held on Monday 26th November at Sheffield Wednesday Football Ground, 5-9pm.  The theme of the event is 'Be part of it!', where you will be able to find out more information about how to get involved in housing services.  Food and refreshments will be provided.

Breaking down Barriers

We aim to break down barriers to participation by addressing people’s needs and providing a safe, supportive environment for BME tenants to have their say on the housing service.

We do this by:

  • Finding out the languages that tenants speak and read
  • Providing translation and interpretation
  • Paying childcare and carer expenses
  • Providing halal and vegetarian food
  • Obtaining permission for photographs
  • Paying travel costs
  • Ensuring disabled access
  • Where possible, providing a prayer room
  • Providing a welcoming atmosphere
  • Using visual aids where possible
  • Allowing the time to hear individual concerns and staff to address them
  • Tenants can bring a support person with them
  • Involving BME staff in the planning of the first Forums
  • Developing a BME Tenants Forum Planning Group
