PAUL KEY AWARDS

HISTORY

In 2007 Sheffield Homes launched a special awards ceremony in memory of Paul Key, a local community champion and valued member of staff at Sheffield Homes.

Paul, who sadly passed away in 2006, was a well-known face around Sheffield Homes through his work in the Community Engagement Team and in the Southey/Owlerton area.  He worked closely with Tenants and Residents Associations (TARAs)  throughout the city to provide support, advice and friendship.  The awards were developed by Sheffield Homes after numerous TARA members suggested that a memorial event should be created.

The Paul Key Community Champions Awards aimed to recognise people in the community that go one step further to help others.

Janet Parry, Director of Customer Services at Sheffield Homes said "We launched these awards as a mark of respect for Paul and to recognise the positive work being carried out in our community.  Paul always went out of his way to help others and he made a real difference to people's lives.  We can be sure that the winners of these awards will be worthy recipients.

People in Sheffield were encouraged to nominate individuals or groups who had made an outstanding contribution to improving their community.  There were 3 award categories:

Community Champion Outstanding Resident Award
Community Champion Group Award
Young Community Champion Award - for a person under the age of 18

The Award Ceremony was well attended and was a great success.

PAUL KEY AWARDS

Over the past 2 years the Paul Key Awards have been integrated into the Community Engagement Annual Tenants, Residents and Governors Conference.  The categories changed and there was only 2 categories:  the Tenant Award and the Staff Member of Sheffield Homes Award.  The 2010 Award Ceremony was held at the Cutlers Hall.  The winners of the two categories were:

Tenant of the Year Award                     Jenny Hobson from Norfolk Park TARA
Staff Member of the Year Award          Lee Hewitt - the Warden of Park View Lodge

PAUL KEY AWARDS 2011

This year the Sheffield Homes Community Engagement Team decided to make the Paul Key Awards a separate event.  It was held on the 8th December at Voluntary Action Sheffield.  Over 50 individuals and community groups from across the city came together to celebrate the  awards.  The Award Ceremony was hosted by Sheffield Homes Community Engagement Team, who acknowledged those truly dedicated people who have made an exceptional contribution to improve their community.

Councillor Isobel Bowler (Cabinet Advisor for Homes and Regeneration) opened the award ceremony and handed out the awards to the winners and certificates to the runners up.

There were 6 categories this year.  A panel, who consisted of Dean Butterworth and Bev Mullooly (Assistant Directors of Sheffield Homes) met in Novemer to agree the winners of each category.  The winners of each category won a specially engraved Paul Key trophy and all those that were nominated received a certificate.

The winners were:

Best Project in the Community Awards                                            Lansdowne TARA

Working with Young People/Youth Involvement Award                Gladys Newbolt

Louise Thompson, Sheffield Homes Community Engagement Manager added, "This is the fourth year we have celebrated the hard work
of tenants and residents through these awards.  Each year I am amazed by the selfless dedication and commitment of individuals and groups to their
communities"
