Travel

Making changes to the way that we travel is one of the easiest ways for us to reduce our carbon dioxide emissions, and the most effective way to do this is simply to drive less.  With a bit of forward planning it is easy to reduce our impact on the environment, and save ourselves money at the same time!  Use the links on this page to help you plan your journey and make better use of alternative methods of transport to driving.

Public Transport

Visit Travel South Yorkshire for bus, tram and train timetables, live departures, maps, ticket information, journey planner and much more information and advice about travelling on public transport in South Yorkshire.

Use the Your Next Bus service from your mobile phone to find out actual bus times when you need them.

Walking

Walking is a great way to travel as it relaxing, good for your health, and best of all it is free!

Use walkit.com  the urban walking route planner to help you plan your journey.  The website shows you the best route for your journey on a map and with written directions.  It also calculates the distance of your journey, the time and number of steps it will take, the calories you will burn and the CO2 that you will save.

Cycling

Cycling is a fantastic way to travel, as it is also a great form of exercise that can help you to feel fitter and healthier and save money and reduce your carbon emissions at the same time!

Visit Sheffield City Council’s website for information on Cycling in Sheffield including a beginner’s guide to cycling, cycle maps and cycle parking.

Driving

When it is essential that you travel by car you can still spend less on fuel and reduce your carbon emissions simply by driving ‘smarter’.  The Energy Saving Trust suggests ways that you can drive smarter, here are just a few:

Remove roof racks, roof boxes and bike carriers when not in use.

Check tyre pressure – under-inflated tyres increase fuel consumption

Switch off the engine if you will be stationary for more than a couple of minutes.

Another good way to reduce the impact of travelling by car is to car share.  You can share the cost of your journey and help to reduce congestion and pollution by making use of Car Share South Yorkshire, where you can search for other drivers who you may be able to car share with.
