Gyspy and Traveller Services in Sheffield

Sheffield Homes took over management of the Gypsy and Traveller sites from the Council on 14th September 2009.

Gypsies and Travellers have been living and travelling through Great Britain for over 500 years and were first recorded in 1501. Today there are between 250,000 and 300,000 traditional Travellers estimated to be living in Great Britain. More recently New Age Travellers have formed part of the travelling community.

Romany Gypsies have been recognised in law as a minority ethnic group since 1988, and Gypsies and Travellers are recognised as an ethnic group under the Race Relations Act.

Sheffield’s Gypsy and Traveller population is around 340 people (100 households) who live on the two long-term council sites in Halfway and Lodge Moor, or in permanent housing throughout different parts of the city.
