Safety in your home

Far too many accidents happen in people's homes, some of them leading to serious injury or even death. Our leaflet Safety in Your Home contains useful advice on how to avoid accidents. It was produced with support from various agencies, including the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.

It includes information on:

  • Security
  • Fire safety
  • Electrical safety
  • The dangers of carbon monoxide, the need for regular maintenance and servicing of gas appliances and how to spot the signs of gas leaks
  • Safety on balconies, landings and stairs, particularly for children
  • How to make sure windows are both safe and secure
  • Disposing of rubbish safely and responsibly
  • Safety around building sites
  • What to do if you find asbestos in your home
  • Child safety
  • Who to contact in emergencies involving fire, gas, electricity or water

Fire safety in flats

We have recently produced a leaflet to advise tenants of flats on how to reduce the risk of a fire in their flat and in their block and what to do should a fire break out.
