Moving Home leaflet

What council tenants should do when they are ready to move.

Information on what tenants need to do if they are about to move out of a council property is in the leaflet "Moving Home". The leaflet is available from all Area Housing Offices. Or you can download a copy from this page.
 
The leaflet includes information about:
 
  • The 4-week notice period you need to give
  • Returning the keys
  • Making sure the rent is up to date
  • Leaving things tidy and removing all your belongings, including furniture and carpets
  • If you have any pets, making sure that you can keep them in your new home and making arrangements for them if you can't
  • Turning off your gas, water and electricity and arranging final readings of your meters
  • What happens about any improvements to the home that you have made yourself
  • Informing the Council Tax Office and what to do if you receive housing or council tax benefits
  • Advice for relatives and next of kin of tenants who have died
  • A list of useful phone numbers and a checklist
